Testing Wave-Particle Duality with Single-Photon Interference Measurements

چکیده

We have observed wave and particle characteristics of light in two distinct experiments. In the first case, a strongly attenuated HeNe laser was passed through a Mach-Zender interferometer. The two legs of the interferometer were given definite, mutually perpendicular polarization to provide which-way information. The resulting interference pattern was captured using a wicked expensive Electron Multiplying CCD (EM-CCD) camera. In the second experiment, a laser was passed through a Young’s double slit and similarly captured. In both cases, the images were observed at both single-photon and many-photon intensities.

Lab2: Single Photon Interference

The wave-particle duality of light was verified by multi and single photon interference both through Young’s double slit and Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In these two sets of experiments, the interference in the single photon level is the same as that at multi photons level with long enough exposure time. In the Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the “whichpath” information can be identified by measu...

Optical vortex knots – one photon at a time

Feynman described the double slit experiment as "a phenomenon which is impossible, absolutely impossible, to explain in any classical way and which has in it the heart of quantum mechanics". The double-slit experiment, performed one photon at a time, dramatically demonstrates the particle-wave duality of quantum objects by generating a fringe pattern corresponding to the interference of light (...

1 Laboratory 2 : Single Photon Interference

The purpose of this experiment was to observe the wave-particle duality of photons by demonstrating that single photons can and do interfere with themselves. This was accomplished through the use of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a Young double slit apparatus. The EMCCD camera used for both experiments can detect single photons to some degree, thus demonstrating the particle nature of photon...

Notice TPA Effets quantiques

Single-photon interference is a beautiful manifestation of the wave–particle duality of light and the double-slit Gedankenexperiment is a standard lecture example for introducing quantum mechanical reality. Interference arises only if each photon can follow several (classical) paths from the source to the detector, and if one does not have the possibility to determine which specific path the ph...

Quantum mechanical which-way experiment with an internal degree of freedom

For a particle travelling through an interferometer, the trade-off between the available which-way information and the interference visibility provides a lucid manifestation of the quantum mechanical wave-particle duality. Here we analyse this relation for a particle possessing an internal degree of freedom such as spin. We quantify the trade-off with a general inequality that paints an unexpec...
